Mobility Matters is a humanitarian out-reach of the Oasis Network that takes small teams on week-long trips to the poorest parts of Nicaragua to assemble and distribute free wheelchairs to people with disabilities.
It is estimated that 100 million people in our world are in dire need of a wheelchair yet lack the resources to obtain one. Already suffering from the pain, isolation and indignity of a physical disability, many of these people must endure further burdens, many are forced to live on the ground or to wait to be carried to meet their most basic of needs.
Wheelchairs provide mobility, and mobility changes everything. Mobility means independence, the ability to participate in society and earn a living. It means dignity, leaving behind the days of living on the ground.
Nicaragua is the second poorest country in Latin America. 43% of the people in Nicaragua live in rural areas and 68% of them struggle to survive on little more than $1 per day.
How can you help?
Travel with us to help assemble and distribute chairs in Nicaragua:
Our trips are not intended for leisure or tourism; they are an opportunity to roll up your sleeves with MobilityMatters and Metanoia, a Free Wheelchair Mission distribution partner. Together we provide the transforming gift of mobility directly to recipients, one free wheelchair at a time. Come alongside us to experience firsthand what disability in a developing country really looks like. Trip costs vary but are approximately $2,000 per person (the bulk of the cost being travel expenses to and across Nicaragua). Our next trip is scheduled for August 8th - August 16th. Contact us for more information.
Donate to help cover team expenses:
With your help a wheelchair can be assembled and delivered to a disabled person in Nicaragua, lifting someone up off the ground and transforming a life. Because no one should have to crawl.
